19 injured in minibus crash at Channel Tunnel terminal in France
At least 19 people were injured when a minibus carrying truck drivers crashed at the French terminal of the rail tunnel linking France and England, according to local officials. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
The crash happened Thursday evening on a loading platform in Coquelles, near Calais in northern France, according to the Pas-de-Calais prefecture.
The passengers were preparing to board Le Shuttle, a train service that carries road vehicles through the Channel Tunnel to England, BBC News reported. Regional authorities said 19 people were injured, including the minibus driver. None had life-threatening injuries.
Eurotunnel, which operates the tunnel, immediately deployed emergency resources, with additional assistance coordinated by local authorities.
A photo from the scene showed extensive damage to the front of the minibus, with emergency personnel and equipment surrounding it in the loading area. The cause of the crash has not been released.
The Channel Tunnel is a 31-mile (50-kilometer) rail link connecting northern France with southeastern England beneath the English Channel. Cars, buses and trucks are transported aboard trains for the crossing.
Le Shuttle carries passenger vehicles, while its freight service transports trucks and their drivers. Separate Eurostar trains carry passengers between Britain and continental Europe, and freight trains also use the tunnel.
