17 injured as Air India flight suddenly loses altitude en route to Delhi
Seventeen passengers and crew members were injured when an Air India flight from Thailand to Delhi suddenly lost altitude during the flight, according to the airline. The plane later stabilized and landed safely.
Flight AI2379 departed Phuket with 137 passengers and eight crew members and was cruising to Delhi when the sudden altitude loss occurred. Air India did not say how far the aircraft dropped or what caused the incident.
Thirteen passengers and four crew members were injured and taken to hospitals for evaluation. Some suffered bruises, according to Times of India journalist Saurabh Sinha, who said an Air India medical team met the flight upon arrival to provide checks and first aid.
A photo shared by Sinha appeared to show cracks in several overhead panels inside the cabin.
The Airbus A320neo continued to Delhi and landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport at 11:07 a.m. local time.
Five passengers had been discharged by 6:50 p.m., while the remaining injured passengers and crew members continue to receive treatment.
The flight was carrying three infants, two pilots and six cabin crew members. The aircraft, registered as VT-EXO, was moved to a hangar after landing.
India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has opened an investigation. The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder were secured for examination, and aircraft manufacturer Airbus was notified.
