17 injured after driver plows into World Cup crowd in Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas
At least 17 people were taken to hospitals after a driver accelerated while surrounded by people celebrating Mexico’s World Cup win in Los Cabos, according to officials.
The incident happened at about 9:05 p.m. Wednesday on Lazaro Cárdenas Boulevard in the tourist zone of Cabo San Lucas, according to public safety officials in Los Cabos, the municipality that includes Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
Authorities said a large crowd had gathered to celebrate the Mexican national team’s victory against the Czech Republic when the driver became surrounded by people who were blocking the road and physically pressing against the vehicle. The driver then suddenly accelerated, striking several pedestrians.
The incident was captured in videos recorded by multiple witnesses, showing the vehicle moving through the crowded street until crashing into ballards.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel treated the injured at the scene before they were taken to hospitals across the city.
The Los Cabos government said 17 people were taken to hospitals in all, a total that included the driver, who was beaten by people at the scene after the crash, according to BCS Noticias. Seven people remain hospitalized, while 10 others were released after being treated for minor injuries.
The driver was detained at the scene and taken under police custody to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, officials said. Prosecutors are reviewing the case.
