12 Polish pilgrims killed, 37 injured in Hungary bus crash
Twelve people have been killed and 37 others injured when a coach carrying pilgrims back to Poland crashed on a highway in Hungary, according to Polish officials. Around 10 of the injured are in serious condition.
The accident happened overnight on the M3 motorway between Budapest and Miskolc. The bus was carrying Polish pilgrims who were returning home when it crashed.
Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said 12 people were killed in the crash and 37 others were injured. All remaining passengers were taken to nearby hospitals in Miskolc, Eger and Debrecen, where about 10 people are being treated in serious condition.
One of the bus drivers involved in the crash has been detained after being questioned by Hungarian police, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Wojciech Zajączkowski said during a briefing on Sunday evening.
Hungarian police said initial findings suggest the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
