11 killed, 32 injured when bus overturns on road in western Mexico
At least 11 people were killed and 32 others were injured when a passenger bus overturned on a road in western Mexico, according to officials. The bus was carrying people to a water park when it crashed.
The accident happened on Friday on the road to Amatlán de Cañas, a municipality in the state of Nayarit, near the community of Pie de la Cuesta, the Nayarit state government said.
Officials said the bus was traveling to El Manto, a recreational water park in Nayarit, after departing from Tlaquepaque, a city in the neighboring state of Jalisco.
There were 41 people on board the bus at the time of the crash, according to a preliminary report. Six people died at the scene and five others died at a hospital in Amatlán de Cañas.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Nayarit and Jalisco. Officials said 18 people were being treated in hospitals in Jalisco, two others were taken to a hospital in Tepic, the capital of Nayarit, and one person in serious condition was transferred to Tala, Jalisco.
Emergency crews from Nayarit and Jalisco responded to the crash, along with the Red Cross, civil protection officials, local and state police, the National Guard and Mexico’s Defense Secretariat.
The cause of the crash was not immediately released.
