One person has been killed and four others seriously injured when a medical transport bus and a dump truck collided in upstate New York, according to officials.

Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione said at a briefing that the crash happened at 1:49 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Route 488 and Freshour Road in the Town of Hopewell.

The medical transport bus was traveling north on Freshour Road when it entered Route 488 in the path of a 10-wheel dump truck, according to Cirencione. The dump truck struck the bus on the driver-side passenger area.

The bus was carrying six passengers. One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while four others suffered serious injuries and were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. Three of the seriously injured passengers were flown by helicopter, while the fourth was taken by ambulance.

A fifth passenger suffered apparent minor injuries and was taken to Clifton Springs Hospital for evaluation. The bus driver also suffered apparent minor injuries and was taken to F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.

The dump truck driver was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

One of the passengers transported by helicopter was unconscious, the sheriff said. Emergency dispatchers also received reports that people were hanging out of the bus windows after the collision.

Cirencione said the intersection is known for crashes, particularly involving northbound vehicles on Freshour Road. Investigators are examining whether speed, distraction, medical issues, alcohol or drugs played a role.
