1 dead, 16 injured after van driver strikes attendants at Berlin pride parade
One person has been killed and 15 others injured after a driver struck people attending a pride parade in Berlin, Germany, according to officials and local media. Some of the injured suffered life-threatening injuries.
The incident happened at about 10 p.m. on Saturday during the Christopher Street Day parade near Lennéstraße in Berlin’s Tiergarten park, according to police. Police said a vehicle drove into the park and struck several people.
Berlin police officials confirmed at least one killed, and another 16 injured. Local media reported that some of the injured are in critical condition.
An eyewitness told BZ Berlin that the vehicle was a white van traveling at least 80 kilometers per hour, or 50 mph. It reportedly entered the park from Tiergartenstraße near a tunnel and struck multiple people before crashing into a tree.
The driver then fled on foot, according to the report. Police are searching the area for the suspect or suspects.
Numerous police officers and rescue workers from the Berlin Fire Department and other emergency agencies are at the scene. Several patients are currently being treated inside the park.
Christopher Street Day is Berlin’s annual LGBTQ pride parade and one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. Organizers ended the parade, and police asked attendees to leave and follow instructions from emergency workers.
