U.S. Vice President JD Vance met Saturday, April 19, with top Vatican officials, including Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s foreign minister.
During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on global issues, particularly in regions affected by war, political unrest and humanitarian crises, the Vatican said in a statement. Special attention was given to the plight of migrants, refugees and prisoners.
The Vatican also expressed hope for “serene collaboration” between the U.S. government and the Catholic Church, acknowledging the church’s work with vulnerable populations.
According to the Associated Press, the language appeared to address recent tensions following Vance’s accusation that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops was resettling migrants in exchange for federal funding — a claim that has drawn strong rebuttals from senior U.S. clergy.
Vance, a Catholic, also attended the Good Friday Passion liturgy at St. Peter’s Basilica with his family.
