The Trump administration removed the head of the U.S. military base in Greenland following a reported email in which she distanced herself from Vice President JD Vance’s criticism of Denmark.
On Thursday, April 10, the U.S. Space Operations Command announced the dismissal of Col. Susannah Meyers from her position as head of Pituffick Space Base due to a “loss of confidence in her leadership abilities.”
What did Vance say during his visit to Greenland?
Meyer’s termination follows Vance’s March trip to Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory that belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. The vice president accused Denmark of not doing “a good job” for Greenlanders. He criticized the island nation’s defense spending, saying it wasn’t spending enough on its military.
How did Meyers respond to Vance’s criticism?
Meyers allegedly sent an email to all base personnel following Vance’s visit. In it, she reportedly wrote that the vice president’s criticism did not reflect the views of the military base.
“I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffick Space Base,” Meyers said.
Meyers became the head of the Arctic base in July 2024. Previously, she served as squadron commander at the a Clear Space Force Station in Alaska.
How has the Trump administration reacted to Meyers’ termination?
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell responded to Meyers’ termination via social media.
“Actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense,” Parnell wrote on X.
The Space Force announced that Col. Shawn Lee will take command of the base.
“Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties,” the statement read.

During his visit to Greenland, Vance reiterated the Trump administration’s commitment to annex Greenland for security reasons.
Both Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly told the U.S. that the territory is not for sale and said the rhetoric harms diplomatic relations.
