American officials in the Bahamas are warning about a string of sexual assaults tied to jet ski rentals in Nassau and Paradise Island beaches.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas released an advisory Wednesday detailing a warning for women traveling to the popular vacation destination. It warns that some Nassau jet ski operators have allegedly raped and sexually assaulted U.S. citizen women.

“Women victims reported that male jet ski operators picked them up from downtown Nassau and Paradise Island beaches. This includes the area from Junkanoo Beach to Saunders Beach and Cabbage Beach,” it read.

According to the embassy, the victims said they were raped and assaulted on isolated islands near New Providence. The embassy said two American women reported rapes in March, adding to the three reported in 2024.

Women visiting the islands are advised against renting jet skis, to be aware of their surroundings, and to stay alert when using public restrooms near a beach in Nassau.

Level 2 travel warning

The advisory comes just over a week after the U.S. Department of State issued a “Level 2 Travel Advisory” for Americans planning to travel to the Bahamas. The advisory warns of armed robberies, burglaries and sexual assaults.

“Most crime occurs in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. Stay alert in the “Over the Hill” area in Nassau, south of Shirley Street, where gangs have killed residents,” the advisory said.

Kentucky women say they were raped

In February 2024, two Kentucky women aboard a cruise ship say they were drugged and raped while on an off-boat excursion to Grand Bahama Island. According to LEX 18, the two women believe they were drugged and then raped while in the city of Freeport.
