Trump says UN should continue amid questions over Gaza ‘board of peace’
U.S. President Trump said the United Nations should continue operating after he was asked whether his proposed “board of peace” for Gaza was intended to replace the global body.
Speaking at a press briefing Tuesday, Trump responded to a reporter’s question about whether the new body would supplant the UN. “The UN has not been very helpful,” Trump said. “I’m a big fan of the UN potential, but it has never lived up to it.”
“The UN should have settled every one of the wars that I settled,” Trump added. “I believe you got to let the UN continue, because the potential is so great.”
A U.S. official told CBS News that Trump wants a signing ceremony for the board during the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday and has considered whether the board’s work should extend beyond Gaza, potentially positioning it as a rival to the United Nations.
Confirmed participants to the board include Canada, Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Paraguay, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Additional countries and organizations have been invited to participate, including Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Ukraine and the European Union, among others.
France has declined the invitation, citing concerns that the initiative could undermine the United Nations, according to Politico.
