Trump says U.S. will pause Iran attacks for 2 weeks under proposed ceasefire
President Trump said the United States will suspend planned attacks on Iran for two weeks under a proposed ceasefire framework tied to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said it will halt its operations if attacks against it stop.
““Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump said in a social media post on Tuesday.
“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!,” Trump added. “The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Long-term PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”
Trump said Iran had submitted a 10-point proposal that he believes could serve as the basis for a broader agreement and that most of the main disputes between the two sides had already been resolved, but that the two-week pause would allow the deal to be finalized.
In a statement from Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi thanked Sharif and Munir for what he called their efforts to end the war in the region.
Araghchi said Iran was responding to a request from Pakistan and to a U.S. request for negotiations based on what he described as a 15-point American proposal, while also citing Trump’s acceptance of the general framework of Iran’s 10-point proposal.
Araghchi said that if attacks against Iran are halted, Iran’s armed forces will stop their operations. He also said safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be possible for two weeks through coordination with Iran’s armed forces and subject to what he called “technical limitations.”
A White House official told Axios reporter Barak Ravid that Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire and will suspend its strikes on Iran for two weeks. The official said the ceasefire would take effect once Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz.
Senior security sources also told Ynet that a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is included in the agreed framework.
