Trump says he commuted former GOP Rep. George Santos’ federal fraud case
President Donald Trump said Friday that he has commuted former Republican Rep. George Santos’ sentence. Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in August 2024.
Trump made the announcement late Friday afternoon in a post on Truth Social.
Santos admitted to lying to donors and stealing the identities of multiple people, including his family, to fund his congressional campaign. He received an 87-month prison sentence, exceeding seven years.
Before reporting to prison in July, Santos told Politico that he didn’t expect any clemency from the president but would continue supporting him.
“I’ll not waver in my support for him,” said Santos.
The former congressman represented New York’s 3rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from Jan. 3, 2023, to Dec. 1, 2023. He was ousted following a House Ethics Committee finding of “uncharged and unlawful conduct” by Santos.
This is a developing story, and more information will be added as it is provided.
