Trump raises possibility of investigation into another former FBI director
President Donald Trump said Sunday that he expects the Department of Justice (DOJ) to be investigating former FBI Director Christopher Wray. The president made the remarks when asked by NBC News during a telephone interview whether the DOJ should investigate Wray.
“I would imagine,” Trump said. “I would certainly imagine. I would think they are doing that.”
Trump added that Wray — whom he appointed in 2017 — “did a terrible job and we just found out about it.”
“I think it’s very inappropriate… what he did,” Trump said. “And I think a lot of his service was very inappropriate. But, we haven’t gone beyond that.”
Trump did not describe what he considers to be Wray’s potentially illegal actions, and Wray has yet to publicly respond to Trump’s comments.
Trump’s comments underscored his ongoing attempts to seek retribution against his perceived enemies. In a social media post on Sept. 20, he demanded that Attorney General Pam Bondi seek indictments against three of his foes, and last week he said “there’ll be others” who face criminal charges. He said, however, the charges are not intended as revenge.
Follows indictment of Comey
So far, the Justice Department has charged former FBI Director James Comey, who is accused of lying to Congress and obstruction of a congressional proceeding, in connection with an anonymous leak to the media about an FBI probe.
Comey maintains his innocence and said he looks forward to defending himself in court. He is set to be arraigned on Oct. 9.
Trump has a contentious history with Comey, whom he fired in 2017 and later blamed for an investigation into alleged Russian ties to the president’s 2016 campaign. Some Republicans have also claimed Comey threatened Trump in a social media post earlier this year.
Wray’s history with Trump
Trump criticized Wray after the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022 as part of an investigation into Trump’s possession of classified documents following his first term in office.
Wray resigned from the FBI shortly before Trump took office a second time. Trump called the resignation a “great day for America.”
Trump said over the weekend in a Truth Social post that the former FBI director “has some major explaining to do” after a report by the conservative media outlet The Blaze that suggested FBI agents without a disclosed mission were in the crowd of rioters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump also accused some FBI agents of likely “acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists.”
The Blaze cited an anonymous source. Previous investigations have debunked claims that the FBI instigated the riot.
Patel remarks on FBI agents at Jan. 6 riots
FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News on Saturday that the officers “were sent into a crowd control mission after the riot was declared by Metro Police.” But he criticized the order as “against FBI standards.”
Patel also accused the FBI under the Biden administration of “corrupt leadership” and of lying “to Congress and the American people about what really happened.”
