In what may be another hint about attempting to run for a third term, President Donald Trump had two baseball caps strategically placed on his Oval Office desk during a meeting with Democratic leaders about the federal government shutdown. The hats, emblazoned with ”TRUMP 2028,” were prominent in photos from the president’s meeting with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Later, in a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump appeared to be enjoying the moment and the dig as a picture shows the president smirking and pointing at Jeffries.

Jeffries’ reaction

Jeffries said he was not amused. He told CNN that the Trump hats came out of nowhere and were displayed on the desk.

“Well, actually, he did not try to hand Leader Schumer and I the Trump 2028 hat,” Jeffries said. “They just randomly appeared in the middle of the meeting on the desk. It was the strangest thing ever.”

Jeffries says the awkward moment continued when he questioned Vice President JD Vance, who has been mentioned as a likely presidential candidate in 2028 and possible successor to Trump.

“I just looked at the hat, looked at JD Vance, who was seated to my left, and said, ‘Don’t you got a problem with this?’” Jeffries continued. “And he said, ‘No comment,’ and that was the end of it.”

US Constitution’s  presidential term limits

The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution forbids Trump from seeking a third term. Section 1 of the amendment states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

That has not stopped the president from making other references to possibly finding a way to seek reelection three years from now. As Straight Arrow News previously reported, he told NBC in March there are “methods” to become president again if he wanted to try. Trump 2028 merchandise is also available at the Trump store online, including hats, shirts and koozies.

The president later amended those remarks in a separate interview with NBC in August, in which he stated he would like to run but would “probably not”.
