Trump to announce semiconductors tariffs in the ‘near future’
President Donald Trump announced his administration is considering imposing tariffs on semiconductors and the “whole electronics supply chain.” His post to Truth Social has raised concerns over how this would impact the prices of items, including smartphones and tablets.
However, it remains unknown when Trump will impose these tariffs.
“Well, that’s going to be announced very soon. We’ll be discussing it,” Trump told reporters. “But we’ll also talk to companies. You know, you have to show a certain flexibility. Nobody should be so rigid.”
Trump’s announcement follows his administration’s issuance of a tariff exemption for key electronics, including iPhones and laptops on Friday, April 11.
However, on Sunday, April 13, he posted that technology-specific tariffs are still on the way and that no one is “getting off the hook” for unfair trade balances with the U.S., particularly China. The president emphasized the sentiment, “We need to make products in the United States.”
His Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, told ABC News on Sunday, April 13, that Friday’s decision to exempt certain electronic devices from tariffs is temporary.
“All those products are going to come under semiconductors, and they’re going to have a special focus type of tariff to make sure those products get reshored. We need to have semiconductors, we need to have chips and we need to have flat panels. We need to have these things made in America. We can’t be reliant on Southeast Asia for all of the things that operate for us.”

This weekend, both Trump and Lutnick announced plans for tariffs on pharmaceuticals, aiming to boost domestic production of prescription drugs.
US deports 10 more alleged gang members to notorious El Salvador prison
Trump’s administration deported another 10 alleged gang members to El Salvador on Sunday, April 13. The government flew the deported migrants to the Central American nation’s notorious terrorism confinement center.
As of Monday morning, April 14, the Trump administration has sent approximately 260 deportees to El Salvador’s prison. Over 100 individuals were sent under the Alien Enemies Act. The administration has used the 18th-century wartime law to target alleged members of Venezuela’s violent Tren de Aragua gang.

The Supreme Court has ordered the U.S. to “facilitate” the return of one of those men, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, to America after the Trump administration admitted to mistakenly deporting him. His family has denied government claims that Abrego Garcia has ties to the MS-13 gang in El Salvador.
On Saturday, April 12, the State Department stated that Abrego Garcia was “alive and secure” but still not on American soil.
The State Department has not yet indicated what steps it is taking to bring Abrego Garcia home.
This comes as El Salvador President Nayib Bukele visits Washington, D.C., to meet with Trump at the White House on Monday.
Suspect charged with arson after fire at Pennsylvania governor’s mansion
In Pennsylvania, police arrested a man they claimed set fire to the governor’s mansion while Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family slept inside early Sunday morning, April 13.
Police charged 38-year-old Cody Balmer with attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson and aggravated assault against a specific individual. Authorities said Balmer jumped a fence and managed to evade state troopers after breaking into the mansion. Balmer fled the scene but later turned himself into the police Sunday afternoon.
Shapiro responded to the incident in a statement.
“First, this type of violence is not OK. This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society. And I don’t give a damn if it’s coming from one particular side or the other, directed at one particular party or another or one particular person or another. It is not OK. And it has to stop. We have to be better than this. And we have a responsibility to all be better.”
Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro
The Democratic Party views Shapiro as a possible candidate for the 2028 presidential race.
Shapiro and his family remained unharmed in the incident.
New York helicopter tour company shuts down after deadly crash
The Federal Aviation Administration announced late Sunday night, April 13, that New York Helicopter Tours, the company involved in the deadly helicopter crash into the Hudson River on Thursday, April 10, is shutting down operations immediately.
The chopper plunged into the river on Thursday, killing an executive from the company Siemens, his wife and their three young children.
The family was visiting New York from Spain.
The crash also killed the helicopter pilot, a Navy veteran.
Bystanders in both Manhattan and New Jersey watched in horror as the chopper’s rotor went flying off and spun through the air, causing the helicopter to plunge out of the sky and crash upside down into the water.
The FAA announced its cooperation with the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the incident. It also launched an immediate review of the operator’s license and safety record.
Earlier Sunday, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for a shutdown of the company offering New York helicopter tours, deeming it a danger to the public.
The company CEO, Michael Roth, has cooperated with the investigation. However, it was the FAA’s decision, not Roth’s, to shut down company operations.
Deadline to file 2024 taxes is Tuesday
The deadline to file 2024 taxes is Tuesday, April 15. Individuals who don’t file by then or request an extension in time will face a penalty.
However, taxpayers in several states are receiving a reprieve. Automatic deadline extensions are in place due to natural disasters, such as hurricanes, in 2024 and 2025. These states include Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Certain parts of other states, including Juneau, Alaska; Chaves County, New Mexico; and several counties in Tennessee and Virginia, will also receive more time.
The automatic extension allows individuals until May 1 to file. Residents in fire-ravaged Los Angeles County, California, will have until Oct. 15, 2025, to file income tax returns. People in all of Kentucky and some counties in West Virginia have seen their deadline extended to Nov. 3, 2025, due to severe storms in February.
Rory McIlroy wins Masters playoff for career grand slam
The 2025 Masters concluded with a dramatic finish Sunday, April 13.
Rory McIlroy held a four-shot lead on the back nine, but after a double-bogey on 13 and a bogey on 14, the tournament was slipping from his grasp.
However, McIlroy made a strong comeback and hit several impressive shots down the stretch. He had a chance to win the Masters with a five-foot putt on the 18th hole, but he missed it.
He and Justin Rose then advanced to the playoff, where McIlroy executed a second shot on the 18th hole in sudden death, placing the ball just four feet from the hole.
This time, he sank the putt and won the Masters.
McIlroy made history as only the sixth golfer to secure all four major championships, alongside legends like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
