President Donald Trump announced a one-time cash payment for U.S. military service members, saying more than 1.45 million troops will receive $1,776 each as a “warrior dividend” tied to tariff revenue and recent legislation, according to the White House.

Trump made the announcement during a televised address to the nation on Wednesday. He said the payments are intended to honor the nation’s founding in 1776 and credited tariffs and a recently passed bill for generating the funds.

“Because of tariffs, along with the just-passed ‘one big beautiful bill,’ tonight I’m also proud to announce that more than 1,450,000 military service members will receive a special ‘warrior dividend’ in honor of our nation’s founding in 1776,” Trump said. “We are sending every soldier $1,776, and the checks are already on the way.”

“We made a lot more money than anybody thought because of tariffs, and the bill helped us along,” Trump added. “Nobody deserves it more than our military, and I say congratulations to everybody.”

Trump also pointed to what he described as a sharp turnaround in military recruiting. “We now have record enlistment in our military, and last year we had among the worst recruitment numbers in our military’s history. What a difference a year makes,” he said.

According to Axios, the payments would total roughly $2.5 billion, representing a small portion of more than $200 billion in tariff revenue collected by the administration this year. Axios reported that it remains unclear how the administration plans to appropriate the funds without prior approval from Congress.
