Trump again says U.S. needs Greenland for national security
U.S. President Trump repeated claims that the United States needs Greenland for national security, as Denmark and allies announced an increased military deployment and exercises in and around the Arctic territory.
Speaking during a signing ceremony at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said the situation involving Greenland was under review and that he expected to be briefed shortly after his remarks.
“We need Greenland for national security, so we are going to see what happens,” Trump said, adding that the United States maintains “a very good relation with Denmark.”
“If we don’t go in, Russia is going to go in, and China is going to go in,” Trump said, adding, “There is nothing that Denmark can do about it.”
Trump also said he had spoken with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and that Rutte “really wants to see something happen.”
The comments come as Denmark and its allies announced an expanded military presence in Greenland. French President Emmanuel Macron said France would participate in joint exercises organized by Denmark under Operation Arctic Endurance, adding that the first French military elements were already en route, with additional forces to follow.
The Danish Ministry of Defence said Danish Armed Forces are deploying units and capabilities beginning Wednesday as part of increased activity in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The ministry said the presence will include aircraft, vessels, and soldiers, including forces from NATO allies.
Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said security in the Arctic is of “crucial importance” to Denmark and its allies, adding that the expanded activity in 2026 is a continuation of efforts launched last year to strengthen the ability to operate in the region.
