The Cure guitarist Perry Bamonte dies at 65

The Cure guitarist and keyboardist Perry Bamonte has died after a short illness, according to a message posted on the band’s website.

The band announced on Friday that Bamonte “passed away after a short illness at home over Christmas,” and said he was “a warm hearted and vital part of The Cure story,” according to the statement.

The Cure said Bamonte, also known as “Teddy,” looked after the band from 1984 through 1989 and became a full-time member in 1990. The band said he played guitar, six-string bass and keyboard on the Wish, Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers, Acoustic Hits and The Cure albums, and performed more than 400 shows over 14 years.

The band said Bamonte rejoined The Cure in 2022 and played another 90 shows, culminating with the “Show of a Lost World” concert in London on November 1, 2024.

The Cure is an English post-punk rock group led by singer-guitarist Robert Smith, known for a decades-long career spanning multiple eras and lineups, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with all his family,” the band said. “He will be greatly missed.”
