Swalwell calls on 2028 Democrats to demolish Trump’s ballroom
Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., is calling on Democrats running for president in 2028 to pledge to destroy President Donald Trump’s $300 million ballroom “on day one.” In a post on X, Swalwell wrote, “Don’t even think of seeking the Democratic nomination for president unless you pledge to take a wrecking ball to the Trump Ballroom on DAY ONE.”
In a follow-up post, Swalwell shared another suggestion, saying nominees should rename it the “Barack Obama Ballroom.”
Backlash over East Wing demolition
Swalwell’s comments come amid growing outrage over Trump’s East Wing demolition, which cleared space for the massive ballroom project.
The surprise move followed earlier assurances from the president that the new structure “wouldn’t interfere with the existing building.” But the entire East Wing has now been torn down.
Three House Democrats are now seeking answers. They sent a letter to the president on Thursday, expressing concerns over what they consider a lack of transparency, the destruction of a historic building and “the ethical integrity of the Administration it houses.”
The White House, however, is defending the project.
“The White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders in other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building’s entrance,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Approvals still pending
The demolition has also raised procedural questions. The National Capital Planning Commission – which must review major changes to federal buildings – has not approved the project due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Despite that, construction continues, and Trump officials insist the ballroom is both “necessary and long overdue.”
