Suspect in Sacramento TV station shooting faces state, federal charges

The man accused of opening fire at ABC10’s Sacramento offices is set to face federal charges in court Monday. Anibal Hernandez-Santana is scheduled to appear in Sacramento federal court at 2 p.m. eastern, according to the FBI. He is also due in Sacramento Superior Court on Tuesday on related state charges.
The shooting
Authorities say at least three bullets struck the ABC10 building Friday afternoon, including one that pierced a window. Investigators described the attack as a drive-by, saying the shots were fired from a vehicle that sped away. No injuries were reported.
The incident comes as ABC faces boycotts and public backlash following its suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel last week — a move that has stirred anger among some of the network’s viewers.
Charges filed
Hernandez-Santana was arrested Friday by Sacramento police and booked on three felony counts: assault with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied building and negligent discharge of a firearm. He posted $200,000 bail and was released Saturday.
Hours later, the FBI rearrested him, accusing him of violating federal law against intentional interference with government-licensed radio communications.
“The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” the FBI said in a statement, according to The Sacramento Bee.
Reaction
Sacramento police spokesman Anthony Gamble called the attack “unacceptable behavior” and pledged continued accountability.
Tegna, ABC10’s parent company, said all employees were safe and that additional security measures had been implemented. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and have taken additional measures to ensure the continued safety of our employees,” spokesperson Molly McMahon said.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom condemned the shooting. “Any act of violence toward journalists is an attack on our democracy itself and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” his office said in a statement.
