Surfer critically injured by shark bite near Sydney
A surfer was left in critical condition after being bitten by a shark at a beach near Sydney, as authorities also reported several other shark-related incidents across Australia.
New South Wales Police said the incident occurred Monday evening at North Steyne Beach in Manly, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Emergency services were called at about 6:20 p.m. local time after reports that a surfer had been bitten by a shark.
Police said members of the public pulled the man from the water and provided first aid before paramedics arrived. The surfer, believed to be in his 20s, was treated for serious leg injuries and taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Following the attack, all beaches on the Northern Beaches were closed until further notice, police said.
Earlier Monday, a young boy was attacked while surfing at Dee Why Beach but was not injured. A day earlier, a 12-year-old boy identified as Nico Antic suffered critical leg injuries while swimming with friends near Shark Beach in Vaucluse.
