Stabbing attack in London-bound train leaves 11 wounded, 2 critical
Two men are in custody following a mass stabbing on a London-bound train that injured 11 people. Two are hospitalized in critical condition.
Police say it was not a terrorist incident.
Reuters reported authorities have two men in custody. Both are in their 30s.
“We’re conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further,” Chief Superintendent Chris Casey said. “At this early stage it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.”
Police reported the stabbings took place on a train traveling from Doncaster to London. The train was an hour in to the trip when the incident occurred.
Passengers told The Associated Press travelers ran through the aisle to get away from the carriage. Some were covered in blood.
“Everyone was really pushing behind us, really panicking,” one passenger told the BBC. He said he saw several people bleeding heavily from wounds.
Officers reportedly used a taser on one suspect holding a large knife. Police said the suspects are both British citizens and being questioned at separate police outlets on suspicion of attempted murder.
King Charles III took to social media on Sunday to express his reaction to the attack.
“Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with all those affected, and their loved ones,” he said. “We are particularly grateful to the emergency services for their response to this awful incident.”
