The suspect in a shooting at a hockey game in northern Rhode Island has been identified as Robert Dorgan, who also went by the name Roberta Esposito, according to police. The shooting left three people dead, including the gunman, and three others in critical condition.

Officers received calls of an active shooter at about 2:30 p.m. Monday at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, a city near Providence. Police arrived within about a minute and a half.

Dorgan, who was born in 1969, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, police said. Authorities said they had no prior interactions with him.

Investigators said Dorgan entered the arena during a senior night hockey game for a family member before gunfire erupted.

The shooting left two victims dead and three others in critical condition. Officials have not released the identities of the victims.

A bystander confronted him during the shooting. “He interjected and he attempted to subdue him,” Police Chief Tina Goncalves said.

Authorities described the shooting as targeted and said it appeared to stem from a family dispute. Police said a family friend was among the victims.

Mayor Don Grebien said family and friends had gathered to celebrate senior night. “Instead, an act of senseless violence has taken the lives of innocent victims, with the suspect taking his own life,” he said. “Three other victims are now in the hospital fighting for their lives.”
