A citywide power outage was reported in Greenland’s capital Nuuk after an incident disrupted electricity supply, according to officials and local media reports.

“Due to an accident, there is a city-wide power outage,” utility company Nukissiorfiit said in a social media post on Saturday night. “Nukissiorfiit is currently working to restore power using emergency generators.”

Greenland Police said the power outage may affect police phone lines, adding that residents can go to their local police station to seek assistance if mobile service is also down.

Greenland newspaper Sermitsiaq reported that parts of Nuuk had been without electricity for about half an hour at the time of publication, noting that authorities earlier this week issued guidance advising residents how to cope for up to five days in the event of a prolonged power outage.

Nuuk is the capital and largest city of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with a population of about 19,000.
