Officer killed, another critically injured in hotel shooting near Atlanta
A police officer was killed and a second officer was critically injured during a response to a fraud call at a hotel in suburban Atlanta, officials said. The suspect was shot and is in custody.
The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. Sunday at a Holiday Inn on East Park Place Boulevard in Gwinnett County, Georgia, about 25 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department. Officers were dispatched to the hotel for a reported fraud or forgery complaint.
Gwinnett County Police identified the officers as Master Police Officer David M. Reed and Police Officer Senior Pradeep Tamang. Tamang died from his injuries, while Reed remains in critical but stable condition, the department said.
The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews. Police said Andrews sustained non-life-threatening injuries and will be transported to the Gwinnett County Jail once he is released from the hospital.
Speaking at a press briefing, Gwinnett County Police J.D. McClure said officers went to a hotel room believed to have been rented fraudulently and were invited inside by the suspect.
“They began discussing the scenario or the incident with him, and at some point the suspect produced a handgun and then, in an unprovoked attack, fired at Gwinnett County police officers,” McClure said. “Two officers were struck. One officer was able to return fire, striking the suspect.”
Officer Tamang had relocated to the United States from Nepal about 10 years ago and joined the department last year. He was engaged, and his family, who were in Pennsylvania, are being brought to Georgia, McClure said.
Department records show Tamang joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in July 2024 and graduated from the 121st Police Academy in May 2025. Reed joined the department in September 2015 and graduated from the 94th Police Academy.
McClure said the suspect has a lengthy criminal history, including multiple felony convictions involving violent crimes, gun offenses, and narcotics, and had active warrants in DeKalb County at the time of the shooting.
Authorities have not released details on the suspect’s alleged role in the reported fraud at the hotel. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken control of the investigation.
