Media Miss by the right: Court blocks Trump bid to end protections for Venezuelans
A panel of three federal judges unanimously ruled to uphold protections for 600,000 Venezuelans living in the U.S. under temporary protected status (TPS).
In May, the Trump administration moved to end the program, which former President Joe Biden had extended. The program allows eligible individuals to live and work in the U.S. legally for up to 18 months if their home countries are affected by natural disasters, armed conflict or other extraordinary circumstances.
TPS currently covers more than 1 million people from multiple countries.
The court found the administration does not have the authority to terminate TPS, only Congress does. The ruling also means Venezuelans in the U.S. under temporary protected status can stay here as long as the program is in place.
Media Miss by the left: Mother of Minneapolis church shooter hires criminal defense attorney
The mother of Robin Westerman, the shooter who killed two children and wounded 18 people at a Catholic church in Minnesota, is refusing to cooperate with investigators. Mary Westerman has also retained a criminal defense attorney.
Police have not indicated whether she’ll face any charges in connection with the shooting.
Minneapolis Assistant Police Chief Christopher Gaiters said she has spoken to authorities, though.
“Through working with our partners, with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension of Minnesota, there has been conversation, and I am not at liberty to go any further than that,” Gaiters said during a news conference on Friday, Aug. 29.
He said police have interviewed other family members and friends, including the shooter’s father.
