Jack Black’s ‘Minecraft Movie’ song becomes shortest ever on Hot 100

“Steve’s Lava Chicken” from “A Minecraft Movie” just made Billboard Hot 100 history. At only 34 seconds long, it’s now the shortest song ever to chart. The viral track debuted at No. 78 for the week ending May 3. It features Jack Black as the voice of Steve, singing about cooking a chicken using lava.
Before the chart milestone, fans were already buzzing about the movie –– especially the “chicken jockey” moment which sparked social media videos of moviegoers screaming, throwing popcorn and bringing actual chickens into theaters.
Streaming stats don’t lie
According to Luminate data, “Steve’s Lava Chicken” earned 7.4 million official streams in the U.S. between April 18 and April 24. That was enough to earn it a spot on the chart, alongside full-length tracks from major artists.
Despite clocking in at just over half a minute, the song also appeared on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart, where it landed in the Top 10.
Black has also previously hit the charts with a movie track. His song “Peaches” from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” reached No. 56 on the Hot 100 in April 2023. “Steve’s Lava Chicken” may be shorter, but its impact is massive.
Big box office energy
The song’s success comes amid a huge box office performance for “A Minecraft Movie.” Released April 4, the film has already grossed over $815 million globally, making it one of the year’s top earners.
