A “reckless” and “indiscriminate” shooting at a pub in Toronto left 12 people wounded Friday night, March 7, according to a superintendent with the Toronto Police Service. While six people suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, the other six were injured by damaged glass. The exact condition of each victim remains unknown.
Around 10:40 p.m. Friday, three men entered the Piper Arms in east Toronto and “opened fire indiscriminately on the people sitting inside,” Toronto Organized Crime Enforcement Superintendent Paul MacIntyre confirmed during a press conference at the scene.
Investigators believe that one of the men was armed with an assault rifle, while the other two were armed with handguns. MacIntyre said that a motive has not yet been identified, calling the shooting “a brazen and reckless act of violence.”
No arrests have been made, though police said that a suspect wearing a black balaclava was seen fleeing the scene in a silver car.
“This is an early and ongoing investigation — police will provide further details,” Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow wrote on social media. “My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
On Saturday, Chow –– who said she was working late at city hall when news of the shooting broke –– held a morning press conference, telling reporters, “It is troubling because of the magnitude of the shootings and the number of people hurt.”
