‘I have bad news’: Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin confessed on Discord: Report
Newly revealed social media messages suggest the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk confessed to the crime to friends online. According to screenshots reviewed by The Washington Post, suspect Tyler Robinson sent a series of notes to a private group chat on the platform Discord shortly before turning himself in.
“Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. I’m sorry for all of this,” Robinson allegedly wrote. “I’m surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments. thanks for all the good times and laughs, you’ve all been so amazing, thank you all for everything.”
The messages were sent Thursday evening, roughly two hours before law enforcement took Robinson into custody after a 33-hour manhunt.
Intel from Discord
Screenshots reviewed by the Post show how members of Robinson’s private Discord chat reacted in real time to news of Charlie Kirk’s shooting last Wednesday. The group included roughly 30 people, according to the person who shared the images.
“Charlie Kirk got shot,” one user wrote that afternoon. About 90 minutes later, another responded: “I just saw the video holy s—. Bro didn’t deserve to go out like that sad.”
Robinson’s account did not reply until the following day, when he posted the message beginning with “I have bad news.”
A spokesperson for Discord confirmed the company has shared the messages with the FBI and local law enforcement. The platform said its own internal review found “no evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on Discord.”
The messages appeared in a small, private chatroom among Robinson’s friends, who later confirmed their authenticity to The Post.
In a separate Discord channel, Robinson reportedly said a “doppelgänger” was trying to implicate him in the shooting after law enforcement released images of the suspect.
Motive still not announced
Authorities say Robinson’s motive is still under investigation. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said initial findings suggest the suspect held a “leftist ideology” and had been critical of Kirk in the past. Cox also said Robinson was in a “romantic relationship” with a transgender partner and that the individual was fully cooperating with the investigation.
Federal officials say the investigation remains in its early stages.
FBI reviewing other social media posts
Separately, the FBI is examining a set of social media posts that appeared to predict or fantasize about Kirk’s assassination, according to The Washington Free Beacon.
Investigators are reviewing at least seven accounts, some of which mentioned Kirk by name before the killing. One post from Wednesday, Sept. 3, read, “it’d be funny if someone like charlie kirk got shot on september 10th LMAO.”
The posts were deleted in the days following the shooting but have been archived and provided to the FBI, according to sources who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon. Federal investigators say there is currently no evidence any of those individuals conspired with Robinson.
