Homan withdraws 700 immigration officers from Minnesota
While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Border Czar Tom Homan announced the Trump administration is “drawing down 700 law enforcement personnel.” He said the drawdown was “effective immediately” and resulted from progress made across Minneapolis and the state.
The troops could begin withdrawing as early as Wednesday, Homan said.
However, Homan emphasized that immigration efforts are still underway in the city. He noted that “federal immigration agents are taking bad people off the street.” He said 14 people have been charged with homicide, 139 with assault, and more.
Homan added that he and the administration respect citizens’ rights to protest. However, he said immigration agents need to be able to work without being assaulted.
He urged citizens to report any violations and acknowledged immigration agents, saying, “I know the sacrifices you make. I wore that green uniform, I love the United States Border Control, I was an ICE agent… The president is with you.”
Even with 700 troops reportedly withdrawing, there are still around 2,300 troops in the city.
The withdrawal aligns with the 32-day timeline set by Trump for the initial mission, indicating this cut was likely scheduled.
Homan on body cameras
Homan also provided additional updates on immigration efforts, addressing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s announcement that immigration officers would begin wearing body cameras. He said the plan is for officers to wear them nationwide, but right now, the priority is Minnesota.
He added that President Donald Trump supports the plan because “we have nothing to hide”.
“We’re not walking away from our mission, this is smart law enforcement,” Homan said.
Homan in Minneapolis
The news comes just weeks after Homan arrived in Minneapolis to address the ongoing immigration efforts. He traveled to the city when Trump ordered a leadership shakeup.
Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino departed Minneapolis after making unsubstantiated claims that Alex Pretti, the man ICE agents shot and killed last month, intended to “massacre” immigration agents.
Homan replaced Bovino as the leading face of the efforts in Minnesota, saying “President Trump wants this fixed, and I’m going to fix it.”
Since his arrival, immigration agents have received new guidance instructing them to avoid engaging with “agitators.”
