Hamas says it will release last living American hostage, cites ceasefire effort

24 living hostages are believed to still be in Gaza, though mixed reports question the fate of three of them.
Hamas said on Sunday, May 11, that they will release the last living American hostage. According to the Wall Street Journal, Hamas said Israeli-American Edan Alexander “will be released as part of the steps aimed at achieving a cease-fire, opening the crossings, and allowing humanitarian aid and relief into our beloved Gaza Strip.” It didn’t make clear what it would specifically receive in return for Alexander’s release.
Hamas militants abducted Alexander, 21, from a military base during the attacks on Oct. 7, 2023. Hamas made the same negotiation offer on March 15.
The announcement comes shortly before U.S. President Donald Trump visits the Middle East this week. The Associated Press reported that Trump is not planning to visit Israel.
Back in April, European countries, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, requested that Israel lift its blockade and allow humanitarian aid into the enclave. The European powers warned that without further aid, Gazans face “an acute risk of starvation, epidemic disease and death.”
In a joint statement, officials from the European nations said, “We urge Israel to immediately restart an unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza in order to meet the needs of all civilians.”
