An armed man wearing tactical gear launched an apparent ambush early in the morning on Monday, July 7, at a U.S. Border Patrol annex building in McAllen, Texas, near the city’s international airport. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the suspect entered the Rio Grande Valley Sector Annex and opened fire on federal agents.

Were there any injuries among law enforcement?

No Border Patrol agents were injured in the exchange. However, a McAllen police officer was struck during the gunfight. Authorities say the officer is in stable condition.

McAllen Police spokesman John Sáenz told Telemundo 40 that investigators are still processing the scene and plan to release more information soon.

CBP issued a brief statement confirming the fatal shooting and said additional details will be shared as the investigation continues.

How did the incident affect local operations?

The shooting caused delays at McAllen International Airport, located near the site of the incident. Officials confirmed that they delayed all flights at the airport for security reasons.

What is the Rio Grande Valley Sector?

The annex targeted in Monday’s shooting belongs to the Rio Grande Valley Sector, one of nine U.S. Border Patrol sectors along the southwest border. Headquartered in Edinburg, Texas, the sector spans more than 34,000 square miles and includes nine stations, two traffic checkpoints and air and marine operations.

Agents in the sector operate continuously and are responsible for patrolling hundreds of river and coastal miles along the U.S.-Mexico border.
