Gunman at large after fatal Shooting at University of New Mexico dorm

Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, are searching for a gunman after one person was killed and another was wounded in a shooting at the University of New Mexico early Friday morning. According to the university, the shooting occurred at a dormitory just before 3 a.m. Friday.
Shelter-in-place alert issued
The university issued alerts in the early morning hours, just after the shooting, advising students to shelter in place due to the unknown whereabouts of the suspected gunman. As of Friday afternoon, the school shut down campus as it remains on lockdown and police conduct a “staged, tactical evacuation.”
University of New Mexico President Garnett S. Stokes released a statement Friday afternoon confirming the campus would stay closed for the day and that a shelter-in-place order remained in effect.
Investigation underway
Campus police responded to a shots-fired call at the Casas del Rio dormitory, where they discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The university reported that multiple law enforcement agencies were present and actively working to investigate what happened.
Police believe the suspect is armed and still at large. Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for anonymous tips that lead to an arrest.
Orientation canceled amid lockdown
The university had planned a new student orientation event for Thursday and Friday; however, that event has been canceled, according to KOAT News. The school’s fall semester is set to begin on Aug. 18.
The University of New Mexico typically enrolls around 23,000 students during the academic year.
