Full Story

President Donald Trump’s administration sued the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) to release workers in several state agencies from their bargaining agreements. Now, the union appears ready to sue them back.

After signing the executive order on March 27, several agencies, led by the Department of Defense, sued AFGE in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. They say that the previously agreed contracts constrain the federal government from following through with the administration’s priorities to “improve efficiency and efficacy of the federal workforce,” and promote national security.

They’re seeking a judge’s order to rule the collective bargaining agreements null and void.

The response

The union initially released an announcement saying they would countersue the administration but deleted the entry on their website. Another statement says they’ll “challenge” the administration.

“President Trump’s latest executive order is a disgraceful and retaliatory attack on the rights of hundreds of thousands of patriotic American civil servants – nearly one-third of whom are veterans – simply because they are members of a union that stands up to his harmful policies,” said AFGE President Everett Kelley.

The union asked for supporters and members to contact their Congress members and “tell them to end Trump’s abuse of power and this direct attack on the labor movement, veterans, working families, and public servants.”
