Google’s AI skips Trump in dementia-related search results

Google’s AI technology appears to be selectively blocking summaries on queries involving President Donald Trump and dementia. When using the feature, an AI summary is not provided when searching for Trump’s name, but results populated for Barack Obama, George W. Bush and other prominent figures.

When users search “Does Trump show signs of dementia?” using Google’s regular AI-powered search, no AI summary is provided – only a standard list of links. The same is true for Joe Biden. But when the same question is asked about Obama or the Pope, Google’s AI offers a direct summary.

For example, the AI result reads, “There is no credible, public evidence or reporting that indicates former President Barack Obama shows signs of dementia.”

A similar response appears for the Pope, stating that he has shown no signs of cognitive impairment.

Google AI mode tells a different story

Using Google’s experimental AI Mode, the inconsistencies persist. When the Trump query is entered, users receive links to articles but no summary. Meanwhile, asking about Biden triggers a detailed AI summary:

“Former President Joe Biden’s health and potential cognitive decline have been a subject of public discussion, particularly given his age and highly visible role in public life.”

It continues with added context and references to Biden’s medical history.

Asking AI Mode about Obama, however, yields a clear conclusion: “Barack Obama does not show signs of dementia. He has remained active in public life and speaking engagements as of late 2025, with no credible reports or documented evidence suggesting cognitive impairment.”

Google responds

The discrepancy was first flagged by The Verge, which reached out to Google for clarification.

“As we’ve said, AI Overviews and AI Mode won’t show a response to every query,” a spokesperson for Google said in response.

The spokesperson also pointed to a document explaining that AI-generated summaries may not appear in all cases, particularly for sensitive or complex queries. In such cases, the system may default to displaying traditional search links.
