Global Amazon outage disrupts major sites, apps and online services
An Amazon outage affected users worldwide Monday morning, taking down some of the internet’s biggest names. Users began reporting the outage around 2:45 a.m. EST Monday.
The company said the issue originated in its eastern U.S. region and that engineers are working to fix it.
Around 5:30 a.m., Amazon began reporting it was seeking significant signs of recovery. By 6 a.m., the company reported seeing recovery across most affected services.
In a statement at 6:30 a.m., Amazon said the issue had been fully mitigated, but techs were still working toward a full resolution. It said some services are still working through a backlog of events, and specific regions are experiencing increased error rates. The company said it would issue another update by 7:15 a.m.
What companies were affected?
Amazon Web Services, the cloud backbone for thousands of companies, experienced a root outage, which knocked out apps and websites ranging from Robinhood and Snapchat to Hulu, McDonald’s and Roblox.
The website Downdetector showed spikes in complaints from users around the globe. It even listed Delta Air Lines and United Airlines among the dozens of companies that experienced disruptions. However, air travel remains largely unaffected, according to Flight Aware.
Even AI startup Perpexity and the crypto platform Coinbase experienced outages, both blaming AWS.
