Fyre Festival 2 has been postponed just weeks after tickets went on sale, according to ABC News. Organizers say the event is delayed, not canceled, though no new date has been announced.
The sequel to the infamous 2017 festival flop was scheduled to take place from May 30 through June 2 in Mexico. Ticket prices ranged from $1,400 to $1.1 million, despite no musical acts being confirmed at the time of the February launch.
History repeats?
The original Fyre Festival was marketed as a luxury getaway on a private island. It promised high-end villas and gourmet dining but ended in chaos.
Instead of lavish accommodations, guests arrived to disaster relief tents, no running water or toilets, and canceled performances. Many were stranded in the Bahamas and struggled to get home.
Billy McFarland, the man behind both events, pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2018. He was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay $26 million in restitution. He was released in 2022 and sent to a halfway house.
Trouble for Fyre Festival 2
Fyre Festival 2 postponed its May dates amid growing concerns about its legitimacy. McFarland’s Instagram teased frequent updates, but those slowed as fans asked for answers.
One commenter wrote on an April 4 post, “What happened to ‘lineup next week’? Next week is over.”
The festival was originally set for Isla Mujeres, Mexico, but switched to Playa del Carmen at the end of March. However, local officials said no permits have been issued for the event.
A verified government post from Playa del Carmen stated in Spanish, “There is no registration, planning or conditions that indicate the realization of such an event in the municipality.”
In response, the Fyre team posted to Instagram that they had been working with Playa del Carmen officials since March 5. They denied media reports claiming otherwise.
No word from McFarland
Despite his usual online activity, McFarland has not publicly addressed why Fyre Festival 2 was postponed. He remains under probation.
ABC News confirmed at least one ticket buyer received a refund and a message that read, “The event has been postponed and a new date will be announced. We have issued you a refund. Once the new date is announced, at that time, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule.”
While Fyre Festival 2 postponed its return, organizers say the event is still in the works. However, whether fans will buy back in remains to be seen.
