Former news anchor charged with fatally stabbing elderly mother

Sedgwick County Police arrested former news anchor Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 47, on suspicion of first-degree murder after police discovered Mock’s mother unresponsive in bed with multiple stab wounds. Emergency services transported Anita Avers, 80, to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:26 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 31.

Police in Wichita, Kansas, discovered Avers after Alyssa Castro, Mock’s next-door neighbor, reported that a woman covered in blood flagged down her boyfriend, asking to use his phone.

“There was a woman who approached our vehicle with like blood, like her hands were filled, her body was filled with blood, asking to call 911,” Castro told Wichita news station KAKE.

Mock took the phone and returned to her home, where she called 911. According to dispatchers, Mock claimed that she stabbed her mother to “save herself.” When police arrived, they found Mock outside with cuts on her hands.

Mock received treatment for her injuries at a local hospital and was later arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.

Aver’s husband confirmed to KAKE that she was a marriage and family therapist at Wichita Counseling Professionals.

Mock’s TV past

According to her LinkedIn, Mock worked as a morning news anchor at Fox 2 in St. Louis for four years, and she also worked at KOKH Fox 25 in Oklahoma City.

She later pivoted from anchoring to sales and was working at a data management software company at the time of her arrest.

What’s next?

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the motive still unclear. Mock is currently being held on a $1 million bond. Information on her first court appearance is unavailable at the time of publication.
