Five of the biggest stories ignored by news outlets on the left in 2025

Bias in the American news landscape is as varied as it is rampant. From over-representation of one perspective to using biased terms and impugning motive, many news organizations slant the day’s events in a way that appeals to their target audience.

One of the most common forms of bias is omission, which leaves out key facts of a story that don’t support a narrative. This tactic can distort a news event just as much as any other type of bias.

Another form of omission is to simply ignore the story altogether.

Straight Arrow News brings you daily Media Misses by newsrooms on the right and left of the media industry. Using data provided by Ground News, coverage of a topic is compiled as it publishes and is then separated based on the partisan slant given to it by bias auditor AllSides and others.

Congressional candidate Shelby Campbell came under fire after a TikTok video surfaced, in which she appeared to admit involvement in a controversial remark about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, saying, “Yes, it’s me.” The backlash intensified after Campbell followed up in the same video, saying, “I don’t think anyone deserves to be murdered,” and suggested that extreme rhetoric can carry real-world consequences.

At the time, Campbell was running as a challenger against Democratic incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar. Critics accused her of recklessly invoking violence.

Campbell’s supporters argued her comments were taken out of context, and she maintained that her campaign was focused on constructive discourse and public safety.

“My campaign is about community over corporations, compassion over cruelty, and people over profit,” she said.

Six Democratic members of Congress with extensive backgrounds in national defense and intelligence released a short video on social media on Nov. 18 directed at fellow service members.

“This administration is pitting our uniformed military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens,” their joint statement warned.

The statement reminded service members: “Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this Constitution.” The members of Congress then repeatedly reminded listeners that service members are legally obligated to refuse any order they believe to be illegal or unconstitutional.

Their shared concern was reportedly sparked by the consistent U.S. military strikes on boats in the Caribbean. Those strikes were widely understood as illegal under both international and U.S. law, putting the service members involved with those strikes in a legal quagmire.

President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice claimed in an internal opinion, however, that the service members involved with these missions cannot be held legally liable for their actions.

According to disclosures by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the Arctic Frost investigation was formally opened in April 2022 with the approval of former U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco and FBI Director Christopher Wray. The probe initially aimed to examine alleged efforts tied to the 2020 election and the use of alternate electors.

Documents released by Grassley indicated that the FBI sought phone data from eight Republican senators and a House member. The investigation reportedly also targeted nearly 100 Republican-linked groups and individuals.

Grassley characterized the probe as a misuse of government authority, going so far as to call it “arguably worse than Watergate.” He committed to continuing oversight, demanding more records from the FBI and the Justice Department to review the full extent of the investigation.

During a 2019 congressional hearing, Rep. Stacey Plaskett, D-V.I., was the subject of claims alleging that she exchanged text messages with Jeffrey Epstein while questioning Michael Cohen about associates of President Donald Trump. According to those reports, timestamps from the alleged messages appeared to align with moments during the hearing, suggesting that Epstein offered feedback on her questioning.

Plaskett’s office responded by acknowledging that she has been open to receiving information from a variety of sources during politically charged proceedings; however, it did not confirm the specifics of the allegations. She had previously received campaign contributions linked to Epstein, which she later directed to charity following public criticism.

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach filed charges against Coldwater Mayor Joe Ceballos, alleging that he voted illegally in multiple elections between 2022 and 2024. According to Kobach’s office, Ceballos is a lawful permanent resident originally from Mexico but not a U.S. citizen.

He faced three counts of voting without being qualified and three counts of election perjury, charges that could carry a combined penalty of more than five years in prison if convicted. Kobach noted that while Kansas law requires city officials, including mayors, to be U.S. citizens, violating that eligibility rule itself is not a criminal offense.
