Federal and state trials for Luigi Mangione pushed back
Luigi Mangione’s federal murder trial has been pushed to October, while his separate New York state trial has been delayed until September, according to NBC News and a state court order.
Mangione’s federal case will now begin with jury selection on Oct. 5, followed by opening statements on Oct. 26 or Nov. 2, NBC News reported, citing a ruling by U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett at a hearing in downtown Manhattan.
Jury selection had previously been scheduled to begin on Sept. 8, with opening statements set for Oct. 13.
NBC News reported that Mangione’s lawyers had asked Garnett to delay the federal proceedings until January, arguing that the overlap between the two cases would make it difficult for him to prepare for the federal trial.
In the state case, an order signed by Justice Gregory Carro and dated April 1 said Mangione’s trial in New York Supreme Court will begin on Sept. 8, replacing the previous date of June 8. The order said the parties are still scheduled to appear in court on May 18.
Mangione, 27, is accused in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was targeted outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan in December 2024 as the company was holding an investor event.
