Drone strike hits U.S. diplomatic facility in Baghdad
A drone strike hit a major U.S. diplomatic facility in Baghdad, Iraq, in what appears to be the latest retaliation against American assets during the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to the Washington Post. The report said there were no immediate reports of casualties.
The strike happened on Tuesday at the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, a large U.S. logistical hub for diplomats near Iraqi military bases and Baghdad airport, according to the Post.
Citing a security official and an internal U.S. alert it reviewed, the outlet said six drones were launched toward the compound, five of which were shot down and one of which hit the facility near a guard tower.
A security official cited by the Post said the attack was likely carried out by militias operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iran-backed armed groups.
The Pentagon said earlier Tuesday that about 140 U.S. service members have been wounded since the start of the military operation against Iran, the first official overall injury count released during the war.
At least seven U.S. service members have died since the operation began, including six killed in an Iranian drone attack in Kuwait and another killed in Saudi Arabia.
