DOJ closed bribery investigation on Trump’s border czar Tom Homan

New questions have arisen about how the Justice Department managed a covert sting operation involving Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan. MSNBC broke the news that Homan was caught on tape in 2024 taking a bag containing $50,000 in cash from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen.
The agents claimed he agreed to assist them in obtaining government contracts if Trump won the election.
Officials launched the federal investigation in 2024. It came after the subject of another investigation made claims that Homan was soliciting payments. The payments were allegedly in exchange for awarding contracts, should Trump win the presidential election.
The claim was made in Western Texas. The U.S. Attorney’s Office there and the FBI asked the Justice Department to join in its probe into Homan.
MSNBC reports that officials believed they had a strong case against Homan for conspiracy to commit bribery.
Because Homan was not a public official at the time, however, no charges were filed.
Trump administration closes case
MSNBC reported the FBI and Justice Department planned to wait to see whether Homan would deliver on his alleged promises once back in the public space. However, the case stalled soon after President Donald Trump took office.
The case that started under the Biden administration was closed in recent weeks, six sources told MSNBC. The case was reportedly closed after FBI Director Kash Patel requested a status update.
Government response
The New York Times reported that FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement that they found “no credible evidence” of wrongdoing. They said that Homan never held contract authority.
But critics have said it raises serious questions about whether the Justice Department is being used to protect Trump’s inner circle.
Homan served as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement early in Trump’s first term. During the 2024 campaign, he openly claimed that he would play a prominent role in carrying out Trump’s promised mass deportations.
