Company plans George Washington statue taller than Statue of Liberty
A Texas-based startup is seeking backers for its new, ambitious project: building the largest statue in the country. The statue, a 500-foot stainless-steel monument to George Washington, would sit atop a 150-foot pedestal to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary.
Mo Mahmood is the creator of More Monuments. The Austin startup doesn’t have an extensive portfolio — only one monument in its history — but it is ambitious. Mahmood told Bloomberg that he wants the monument to serve as a source of inspiration.
“When you look at my statue, you’ll be able to tell it’s George Washington, and I think that’s important,” he said. “When they look at it, I want people to feel a sense of hope and optimism.”
What are the details of the statue?
The startup claims the statue will be the largest in the country, dwarfing the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument. Mahmood has called the project the “Colossus of George,
a likely allusion to the Colossus of Rhodes. However, George would tower over the ancient wonder, which only stood at about 110 feet.
The company has not released many details about the project. Mahmood has not said where he plans to build it, how long it will take or how much it will cost. He has said several people are already backing the project, raising $175,000. However, estimates of construction costs put the project’s price tag in the millions.

Mahmood is raising funds for the statue by taking donations and by selling materials inscribed with donors’ names. Naming opportunities include a plaque for $10,000 or a brick for $1,000, and will eventually be added to the statue’s pedestal.
Another way Mahmood is raising revenue for it is through his new cryptocurrency, $GEORGE, which people can buy and trade. The company claims the statue and the coin will increase each other’s value.
“The coin fuels the monument. The monument fuels the coin,” the company said.
What has the company done in the past?
The company has never done a project as large as George before. Before the statue, the company created a monument to honor the first major oil derrick ever drilled in Texas.
The derrick, called the Wellspring of Progress, is located just outside of Austin. The company said the statue, dedicated in December 2024, is a “tribute to the breakthrough oil strike that changed America.”
According to the company, the monument cost $40,000 to complete.
Will this actually get completed?
Mahmood has said that he would like to unveil the statue on America’s 250th birthday, which is less than a year away. This leaves little time for him to find more funding.
The company said it may create a 50-foot statue to make sure it can unveil something for Independence Day. Mahmood said he will build the bigger statue at a later date.
