A young child was killed and three other people were injured after a driver struck a family with a vehicle and then opened fire in Delta Township, Michigan, authorities said. The suspect is in custody.

The incident occurred Friday near Green Meadows Drive and Farmstead Lane in Delta Township, a community west of Lansing in Eaton County. The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to reports of an active violence incident and found four victims at the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate the suspect drove a vehicle into a family who were out for a walk. Authorities said the suspect then exited the vehicle and fired multiple shots at the family members. A bystander who attempted to help was also attacked and suffered serious injuries.

A young child was pronounced dead at the scene. A 37-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were hospitalized in stable condition. A 72-year-old woman remains in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies began life-saving efforts while searching for the suspect, who was later located and taken into custody with assistance from the Michigan State Police. He is being held at the Eaton County Jail pending authorization of charges.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect. Officials also have not disclosed a possible motive or said whether the suspect had any prior relationship with the victims.

The incident led to a shelter-in-place alert for nearby areas, warning residents of an active shooter. Authorities later said they have reason to believe the incident was isolated and that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
