The city of Chicago’s City Council passed a resolution barring Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol rioters from working for the city.

The city’s aldermen passed the measure with a vote of 43-3.

Directive targets job applicants tied to Capitol attack

The new directive orders the commissioner of human resources to reject or disqualify any job applicant if that person participated in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot in Washington.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, 53 Illinois residents were arrested for crimes related to the Jan. 6 riots — 43 of them were convicted before President Trump granted a sweeping pardon to more than 1,500 Capitol rioters.

Only a few of the arrested Illinois residents live in Chicago, and one of them was already employed as a Chicago police officer.

“You should not be allowed to work for the same government you are attempting to overthrow. There is a misalignment in values there,” said Alderman Gilbert Villegas, the resolution’s chief sponsor, as reported by local Fox 32 News.

Immediate enforcement and broader precedent

The resolution applies to anyone who participated — regardless of the pardon — and takes effect immediately.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, D, also signed an executive order days after Trump granted the pardons, blocking Jan. 6 rioters from applying for state jobs.
