Body found near home of missing Texas teen; no foul play suspected
A body was found near the home of missing 19-year-old Camila Olmos in Bexar County, Texas, though authorities said it is too early to confirm whether the remains belong to her.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said during a briefing on Tuesday afternoon that the body was discovered at around 4:40 to 4:45 p.m. in a field a few hundred yards from the teen’s residence.
Salazar said investigators do not currently suspect foul play and noted that one of the possibilities authorities had been considering was self-harm. He said the medical examiner will be responsible for making a definitive identification and determining the cause and manner of death.
Salazar said the body was found by a joint search team from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI after investigators decided to recheck an area with that had already been searched. He said tall grass had limited visibility during earlier searches, and the body was found about 10 minutes after teams returned to the area.
A firearm was found very near the body, Salazar said, adding that investigators had been searching for a firearm reported missing from a family member.
The case involves 19-year-old Camila Olmos, who was reported missing from her home in Bexar County on Christmas Eve, according to KENS. A CLEAR Alert was issued on Christmas Day after authorities said she could not be located.
According to KENS, a neighbor’s surveillance video captured Olmos standing near her vehicle at around 7 a.m. on Dec. 24 in the 11000 block of Caspian Spring. Her mother, Rosario Olmos, told the station that she and her daughter had been sleeping together that morning and that she noticed Camila get up.
When she woke up about an hour and a half later, Rosario Olmos said Camila was gone, though her vehicle was still at the home.
Authorities have said the only video obtained during the investigation was a portion of dash camera footage that appeared to show someone walking along the side of a road, whom investigators believed to be Olmos, according to KENS.
The Texas Department of Public Safety, which issued the original CLEAR Alert, discontinued the alert Tuesday evening.
Bexar County is located in south-central Texas and includes the city of San Antonio.
