An Amtrak train collided with a vehicle in southeastern Louisiana, injuring at least two people, according to officials.

The crash happened at about 2:40 p.m. on Highway 51 and Ponders Quarters Lane, just south of Amite, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said the crash involved an Amtrak train and a vehicle, but it was not immediately clear how many people were on board either one.

In an initial alert, the sheriff’s office said the number of passengers on the train and in the vehicle, along with the extent of any injuries, was unknown.

About 20 minutes later, the sheriff’s office said one victim had been transported with injuries. In another update at 3:30 p.m., authorities said a second victim had also been taken for treatment. No information was immediately released about the severity of the injuries or whether those hurt were aboard the train or the vehicle.

Highway 51 in the area was shut down as deputies responded to the scene. No further details were immediately available.
