Advancing robotics with VATAG in Ukraine: Weapon of the Week

As Ukraine continues to modernize its defense capabilities, one area drawing increased attention is unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). Among the companies leading this effort is VATAG, a Ukrainian firm developing heavy-duty robotic platforms designed to reduce human exposure on the battlefield, and this week’s weapon of the week.
Anatoly Nikitin, project manager at VATAG, spoke about the company’s mission during a recent defense exhibition.
“We are designing a new step in unmanned ground vehicles,” Nikitin said. “Our focus is on heavy platforms that can replace human-operated APCs and transport systems.”
What makes VATAG different?
Unlike many UGVs on display, which tend to be smaller and lightly armored, VATAG’s vehicle is built for durability and modularity. Nikitin said the platform can be configured for assault, defense, or logistics missions.
“Humans are more vulnerable than iron,” he said. “Our vehicle is armored, flexible, and designed to carry out tasks without risking lives.”
While the exhibition showcased the vehicle’s potential firepower, Nikitin emphasized logistics as the company’s primary focus. He cited his own experience in Ukraine’s Third Assault Brigade, where he served until early 2024.
“Logistics is the crucial part now,” he said. “Our vehicle can carry up to two tons and travel off-road at 47 kilometers per hour.”
The vehicle is manufactured entirely in Ukraine, though VATAG is exploring future production abroad to meet potential export demand. Nikitin said interest from international partners, including the United States, is growing.
“We’re much cheaper than similar platforms abroad,” he said. “We believe there’s real potential for global collaboration.”
As Ukraine continues to seek innovative ways to protect its forces and maintain battlefield mobility, heavy unmanned ground vehicles like VATAG’s may play a key role in shaping the future of warfare.
