A major winter storm system rolled through sections of the U.S. on Tuesday, March 4, killing at least two people. The severe weather appeared in different forms depending on the location as dust storms moved through the Southwest and blizzard conditions took over the Midwest.

A reported tornado touched down in Irving, Texas, with winds of up to 110 miles per hour. Other reported tornadoes struck in Oklahoma, Louisiana and Nebraska.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves confirmed two deaths in the state in a post to X. According to local reports, one person died from a falling power line and a driver was killed when a tree fell on his car.

Storm damage left hundreds of thousands of people without power in several states, including more than 178,000 in Texas. The Lone Star State also saw wildfires ignite due to the mix of high winds, low humidity and dry vegetation.

Regarding the blizzard conditions, several school districts closed campuses Wednesday, March 5, in southern Minnesota, where meteorologists expect at least 5 to 11 inches to fall, along with wind gusts of over 50 mph.

FlightAware.com reported that airlines canceled more than 500 flights nationwide due to the severe weather. Airports in Dallas canceled the most flights.

The severe weather also caused New Orleans to alter some Mardi Gras events on Fat Tuesday. Officials shortened parades and rescheduled other celebrations.
